Episode 84 ~ Nightmare at Noon (1988)

This week we come back with a curveball! In this weird western, horror, and action, hybrid, we get cult favorite Nico Mastorakis' most infamous movie, Nightmare at Noon from 1988! Starring three b-movie titans in Wings Hauser, George Kennedy, and Bo Hopkins, there isn't quite another movie like this out there.

Of course it does have its warts, so be sure to check out today's episode to see what they are! I promise you, there is nothing quite like this movie.

Episode 71 ~ Tremors 4: The Legend Begins (2004)

It's very rare that you can get three entries into a series and it manages to retain quality. It's even rarer that a fourth entry manages to stack up and be recommended, but Tremors has not only managed a hat trick, but has scored a fourth goal as well.

Essentially a weird western, Tremors 4 shakes up the formula by not only completing the life cycle of the Graboid (something each movie has contributed to) but also goes as far the formula can go. Check out today's episode to see just what that means.

Non-Cannon ~ Episode 109 - Road House (1989)

You knew this one was coming eventually.

What can one say about Road House that hasn't been said over a hundred times by now? But since it has regained the reputation it has deserved since the grimdark age of the 2000s, it is worth talking about even now. Probably Patrick Swayze's best known role outside of Dirty Dancing and Ghost, 1989's Road House is the movie that should have made him an action icon. It's cool, it's tough, and it's fun, an outright blast to watch with something interesting always going on.

Whatever negative idea you might have of Road House will definitely melts away when you actually see it. There really isn't anything else like it out there, and there probably never will be again. Road House is a cult favorite for a very good reason.

Non-Cannon ~ Episode 103 - Extreme Prejudice (1987)

A return to the cinematic world of Walter Hill was overdue, and in this, perhaps the most overlooked film of the 1980s. Partially written by John Milius, Extreme Prejudice feels like a movie that could have been made at the time but just missed being made, except that it was. Part action, part western, part neo noir (for real, this time), this is as close to Sam Peckinpah that Walter Hill ever got. And it is as good as that sounds.

Starring such actors as Nick Nolte, Powers Boothe, Rip Torn, William Forsythe, and Clancy Brown, the movie is a high testosterone thrill-ride where the intensity starts from the word go and doesn't let up for its 100 minute screen time. Extreme Prejudice is everything you would hope a movie like this would be, and then some. All this, and it never finds a way to be unengaging. This is a film that gets everything that matters very, very right.

Non-Cannon ~ Episode 79 - Tombstone (1993)

Today we decided to cover a genre we haven't really had the chance to cover since it was hibernating for most of the time period Cannon Cruisers covers. Today we took a look at a western! but not any western. We took a look at the 1993 classic Tombstone starring Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer, among many other talents.

But does it hold up?

You'll have to see the full episode to see, but the short answer is that it plays even better today than when it came out. A story about Justice, centered around the legend of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday and the shootout at the OK Corral, it packs just about everything in you want to see in a western, an action movie, and a drama. And all of it still plays perfectly today.

You'll have to listen to the full episode to hear our thoughts, but rest assured that the movie is worth your time. They definitely don't, and can't, make them like this anymore.
