Episode 127 ~ Mouse Hunt (1997)

This week we get really obscure (or do we?) with one of the last slapstick comedies of the 20th century, 1997's Mouse Hunt! It's zany, over the top, and weird, but oddly not as dated as one might think despite the time it came out in. That said, it still holds up quite well.

Episode 126 ~ North (1994)

It's been a while, but we finally have a candidate for worst movie we've ever watched on Cannon Cruisers! 1994's North is up there with Bolero as bottom of the barrel. This film has all kinds of talent involved and none of it works on any level.

You're going to have to watch today's episode to find out why, because you won't believe it otherwise. This is one of the biggest flops in cinematic history in how it did much damage to a director that was once highly acclaimed. Few movies can make that claim, but few movies are also this legitimately terrible.

Episode 119 ~ Stay Tuned (1992)

Every now and and then on Cannon Cruisers we come across a hidden gem that should be far more well known than it actually is. Today's episode features one of those movies. 1992's Stay Tuned is one of the best movies you've never heard of.

Perhaps it was a bit too ahead of its time, and just outside the decade full of movies it is most similar to, but this film is one unlike any you've seen. Think if Joe Dante had decided to direct a Ray Bradbury style story about a salesman selling a satellite dish made by demons and you might get close to this one. There isn't much else like it.

So check out today's episode to learn more about this cult classic. It deserves more than it has gotten so far.

This is a movie none of us remember. From the writers of the Bill & Ted series comes another zany adventure into the unknown. A parody of Flash Gordon starring a middle-aged married couple? Definitely a bizarre concept.

Episode 115 ~ Weird: The Al Yankovic Story [2022]

This was the obvious follow-up from last week: it's the other Weird Al movie! And wouldn't you know it, this one is just as good as UHF from 1989!

Weird simultaneously skewers music documentaries with the same brand of Weird Al comedy you definitely know so well by now. To go into what it gets right (and wrong) about Al Yankovic's life story would require an entire episode itself, but what it does get right is the comedy. This film is easily on par with the cult favorite UHF.

We can finally cross this one off our list! After year's of promising 1989's UHF and not delivering, we eventually managed to get around to it! If you don't know what this is, I don't think I can do much to describe it in enough detail to have it make sense. It's the "Weird" Al Yankovic movie with the memes you've probably seen online.

And it not only holds up, it's still as good a movie as ever. You will have just as much of a blast watching UHF today as you did in 1989.

Despite its popularity, its never had a sequel and one might wonder why that is? That is because it has something to do with the way the movie itself is.

This is a unique film that uses horror movie conventions to make a humorous twist on the usual tropes. It works well, almost too well, which means it can't ever really be replicated again. Find out why in today's episode!

Episode 110 ~ Detention (2011)

Honestly, I'm not exactly sure how to describe what Detention is. Given it's release, it was a parody of the plethora of faux-deep overindulgent teen movies from the '00s, but it's also kind of a parody of slashers movies from the same period. It's a bit hard to peg.

Outside of its context, the movie is simply nonsensically weird in a way you will either like or not. How effective is it? You'll have to listen to today's episode to find out!

Episode 100 ~ Cast A Deadly Spell (1991)

We did it: we made it to 100 episodes (again)! In case you aren't keeping track, combined with our pre-Bonus Feature lineup, we now have a total of 400(!) episodes Cannon Cruisers. At this rate we might even hit 500 next year for our 10th(!) anniversary. Crazy to think about.

All that aside, today's episode is also a weird one: a film that was so obscure it only aired on HBO back in the day yet might be one of the most influential films of the decade. If you haven't heard of Cast A Deadly Spell, well, now is the time to hear about it. Because even still despite so many years passing and others aping it, there is still nothing quite like it.

And that's why we give it top marks.

Time for another curveball! This week we covered our first pure Hong Kong production with 1986's grossly underrated classic Magic Crystal. This flick has everything you love about 80s movies: action, comedy, adventure, weirdness, and fun characters, all from the era when Hong Kong was still one of the best producers of movies (up there with the US and Italy).

Unfortunately not well known, we'll talk about it and why you should run, not walk, to see this one as soon as possible. Magic Crystal is a real gem! (Sorry.)

Episode 75 ~ Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006)

Here is a gem charging in out of left field. Why are the Cannon Cruisers giving a horror movie from the '00s a perfect score, and not only that but a slasher movie on top of it? Shouldn't we be far more critical of it, considering our tastes?

It turns out that Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is part comedy, part horror, part mockumentary, and yet also both a deconstruction and reconstruction of the slasher genre. It highlights what makes it stand out, why it resonates, and why it (at the time) had been so ubiquitous for two decades. In the two decades since its release it has only aged better.

Truth be told, it's nearly flawless. Let's discuss why that is in today's episode!
